personal tax

We offer a full range of personal tax services to meet your needs.

We have a specialist tax department which works closely with the partners to ensure that your affairs are up to date, that you utilise all the available allowances and reliefs, and that your tax bill is kept as low as possible.

Tax returns

With the increasing complexity of the tax system, it has become very difficult for any taxpayer to prepare their own income tax return. We use the best available software to ensure that your tax affairs are dealt with quickly and efficiently, whether your tax return is simple or complex. We file most returns on line, to ensure that repayments are obtained quickly and to reduce Inland Revenue errors.

Early in the tax year, we will send you an aide memoire to remind you of the information we need to complete your return. We will chase you up if necessary and remind you of deadlines so that you don’t end up with a fine.

You will receive a copy of your return, full tax schedules and a clear calculation of the amount you need to pay or can reclaim. If you would like us to explain the entries on your return, we are happy to meet with you. Throughout the year, we will check the Inland Revenue demands and calculations to ensure that you pay no more tax than is necessary.

Tax planning

Proper planning of your tax affairs is an important part of our service. A regular review of your overall income tax, national insurance and capital gains tax affairs can often highlight areas where substantial savings can be made, or where allowances are not being fully utilised. If you are thinking of making changes that might effect your tax position, come and talk to us first.

Inheritance tax mitigation

Although the nil rate band has increased with inflation, it has not kept pace with the increase in value of houses and investments, and many more estates are likely to become liable to inheritance tax. Careful planning can give rise to very substantial savings. We can prepare a report for you to highlight the available exemptions, summarise potential liabilities and when they would be payable, and to outline ways to reduce, defer or eliminate the tax liability. We can work closely with your solicitor to help to ensure that your family will be financially secure and that your will is updated for recent changes in tax legislation.

Trusts and Estates

Despite various changes in legislation, trusts can still be very useful both to ensure that assets pass in accordance with your wishes and to save tax.

We have considerable experience in all aspect of planning and administering UK trusts, and where appropriate, our partners may be able to act as trustees or executors.

Inland Revenue Enquiries

Our expert advice will help to minimise the risk of investigation of your tax affairs by HM Revenue and Customs, but under the Self Assessment regime, all taxpayers run the risk of Inland Revenue enquiries. As the professional fees arising can be substantial, we offer the cost effective CCH Taxsure scheme to cover these costs for a modest annual premium.

We have extensive in house experience in dealing with Inland Revenue enquiries, and have an excellent record in achieving successful settlements.
